First aid for your skin in winter

Stralende winterhuid met goede verzorging

Winter is an ordeal for our skin every year. Cold temperatures, dry air and inclement winds can lead to redness or chapped lips. Skin also tightens up and takes on a dull appearance. Our three basic tips will keep your skin in shape this winter, too.

Tip 1: Hydrate

Enemy number one in winter is dehydration of your skin. Wind, cold air, heavy clothing and temperature changes between indoors and outdoors reduce the skin’s protective layer. Then, if you don’t regularly moisturize the thinning protective layer with a cream, balm or serum, the skin starts to migrate, fine lines become visible and your skin looks a lot less fresh than in the summer.

Soap is also best put away until after winter. It dehydrates instead of moisturizing. A warm bath or a hot shower can be blissful after a winter walk, but be aware that it also dehydrates your skin. So moisturizing well afterwards is the message.

Tip 2: Remove dead skin cells

To allow moisturizer to penetrate your skin better, it is important to regularly remove dead skin cells in winter. To do so, use a glycolic acid-based exfoliant, combined with glycolic acid peels. Plus, your “renewed skin” will have a fresher appearance, look less dull and feel softer.

Tip 3: Take care of your lips

Sunscreen is standard in the luggage for those who travel to the sun in the summer. So should it be on a ski vacation. After all, your lips – and your skin – get a hard time due to the cold temperatures, inclement winds and more powerful sun in the mountains. Before, during and after winter sports, a good lip balm with sun protection and a high-quality sunscreen are therefore absolute musts to protect your – fragile – skin. And not only on winter sports, also at home!
