Vaginal dryness during menopause: cause and treatment

vaginale atrophy - oorzaak en behandeling

One of the consequences of menopause is vaginal dryness. The culprits? Lower estrogen production and reduced blood flow. The result? An uncomfortable burning sensation due to weakened moisturization. With the MonaLisa Touch® laser treatment, however, we offer counsel.

Vaginal dryness: when and why

Vaginal dryness is a typical problem in menopausal women. This is because menopause is accompanied by a decrease in estrogen production. Among other things, this hormonal change causes the vagina’s moistening mechanism to weaken. In addition, with age, the blood flow in the genitals decreases, so that moistening is slower.

Physical and psychological discomforts

Vaginal dryness can lead to a burning sensation and pain during intercourse (dyspareunia). During penetration, the vagina then becomes irritated and sometimes even bleeding occurs. An additional problem after menopause is vulvovaginal atrophy. As a result, the sheath wall becomes thinner and loses its elasticity. Both phenomena cause physical discomfort during sexual intercourse. Moreover, they also negatively affect libido, femininity and self-confidence. Sometimes they also cause frustration in the woman and in the relationship.

How do we treat vaginal dryness?

Hormone treatments are an option, but we choose MonaLisa Touch®. With this painless laser treatment, we return to the pre-menopausal state in three sessions of ten minutes each. To do this, the sheath wall is briefly irradiated with a laser probe. The laser light stimulates blood flow to the inner wall of the vulva and the production of new collagen and elastin fibers. This improves hydration, restores secretion through the sheath wall and restores its former thickness, firmness and elasticity. An annual maintenance treatment is then sufficient to maintain the same feeling as before menopause, even during intercourse.
