As we age, the skin slackens. This can cause the skin at the upper arms to droop, creating what are known as "chicken breasts. This can also be the result of losing a lot of weight. Intensive exercise or firming creams will not solve this problem. However, an arm elevator can provide the desired result. Excess skin and fatty tissue is removed through an incision on the underside of the arm. This tightens the skin and makes the upper arm look more attractive. Although scars are inevitable with this procedure, they are easily eliminated and are virtually unnoticeable with proper aftercare.
What treatments are available?
- Arms that have become limp can be treated in several ways.
- An arm elevator removes excess fat and skin.
- When the skin is still elastic enough, liposuction may be sufficient to achieve the desired results. This involves the removal of excess fat. Compared to an arm elevator, this method is less invasive.
- A combination of the two treatments can also be helpful. For example, when a lot of fat needs to be suctioned out in addition to removing excess skin.
- Which treatment is most appropriate the doctor will discuss with you during the initial consultation.
The intervention
An arm elevator is a relatively major procedure that takes about 2 hours, under full anesthesia. Prior to surgery, the doctor marks off the amount of skin to be removed. During surgery, this skin is cut away from the layers of fat and muscle underneath. An incision is then made between the armpit and the elbow so that skin can be removed from the underside of the upper arm. Fatty tissue will also be suctioned out in between. Afterwards, the skin is neatly sutured and a scar will eventually be left on the inside of the upper arm. Within a few hours, you will be able to return home peacefully.
Results after an arm elevator
After the procedure, the upper arm may feel painful. To reduce swelling, you will wear a bandage for a week and then an elastic stocking. You may also experience bruising, swollen skin and bruises. These will go away on their own after a few weeks. We do not recommend heavy work during the first few weeks. After 6 weeks you will be able to fully use your arms again. The results of the arm elevator can be seen fairly soon after surgery. After the swelling has completely subsided (6 weeks), the final result is clearly visible.
Scars
- The plastic surgeon does his best to make the scars as inconspicuous as possible.
- The scars created by an arm elevator may become redder and sensitive for some time after the procedure.
- Within a year, the color will become more similar to your skin, making the scars less noticeable.
- Proper aftercare is very important here. By applying scar cream, you increase the chances of a beautiful healing.
