When to choose breast reduction surgery?
Possible reasons are:
- Neck, back or shoulder pain due to the weight of the breasts
- Pendulous breasts with downward-pointing nipples
- Asymmetry (one breast larger than the other)
- Uncertainty about appearance or discomfort with sports and daily activities

Breast reduction - the treatment
On average, a breast reduction takes about one to three hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Since different types of breast reduction can be used, the surgeon will discuss with you in advance which method will be used. Usually the breast is reduced in size by removing skin and glandular tissue centrally on the underside of the breast. To give the breast a natural shape, a figure suture is made from the nipple straight down, which provides the scar. Then the nipple is repositioned and the areola is reduced in size. The final scar is then shaped like a lollipop. If there is a lot of excess skin, sometimes additional skin is taken away under the breast, creating a short horizontal scar in the ploooi. After surgery, the breasts are taped with plasters and the drains that drain the wound fluid will remain in place for a few days. Some pain occurs mainly during the first 24 hours after surgery. After that, the breasts may feel somewhat swollen and congested. It can sometimes take up to four to eight months for the breasts to take their final shape.

Aftercare and recovery from your breast reduction surgery
It is wise to have help the first week after returning home. In doing so, it is important to give the wound plenty of rest. The more you do that, the nicer the scar will heal. You will be able to resume most daily activities after a week or two. We recommend wearing a supportive bra for 6 weeks, day and night for the first 4 weeks, then only during the day. To smooth the scars faster, massage with a cream or lotion can help. You can begin this once the wound has healed properly. With breast reduction, you run the same other risks as any other surgery. The wound may bleed or infection may occur. After surgery, the breasts are smaller and firmer, but there are scars. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that the desired cup size will actually be achieved with the breast reduction.
