We refer to a nipple as inverted or nipple retraction when the nipple is flat or completely or partially pulled inward. Both men and women can experience this condition. Approximately 10 percent of all women have an inverted nipple or a nipple that is not properly developed. Most inverted nipples are congenital. However, they can also develop after breast surgery or mastitis. As women age, the shape of the breast can change, causing the nipple to retract slightly. Spontaneous retraction of the nipple or breast skin can be a symptom of breast cancer. If this happens to you, notify your family doctor first.

Correcting inverted nipples

There are several types of procedures available to correct an inverted nipple. The most suitable procedure for your situation depends on how and to what extent your nipple is inverted. During the initial consultation, the surgeon will examine your condition and then discuss the steps to be taken and the type of surgery. He will also ask about your wishes and expectations regarding the surgery. If the nipple is normally shaped, a small ring will be placed under the nipple to prevent it from being inverted. The milk ducts remain intact so that breastfeeding is still possible after this procedure. If the milk ducts are the cause of your nipple being inverted, the nipple must first be detached from those milk ducts. These can be damaged, which may make breastfeeding impossible after the operation.

Recovery after inverted nipple correction

The corrective surgery on the nipple will take approximately 30 to 45 minutes. You may go home immediately after the procedure. The nipple and breast will be swollen for the first three days after the surgery. Small bruises are also often visible. You should rest and avoid heavy work on the first day after the procedure. You can usually return to work after two days. Because it is a relatively minor procedure, the risks and complications associated with inverted nipple correction are generally minor. Scars will remain visible after the operation, but they will fade over time. However, they will never disappear completely.
