Men also have mammary glands under the areola. Sometimes these can develop into actual breast tissue. This happens spontaneously and without any apparent reason. There are various ways to reduce the size of a man's breasts. For example, by means of liposuction, excision of excess glandular tissue, or a combination of both methods.

Causes and treatment options
Gynecomastia can be caused by:
- Excess glandular tissue – treated by surgical removal

In cases of excess fat without glandular tissue, weight loss and exercise can sometimes lead to improvement. During the consultation, your plastic surgeon will determine which method is most suitable.
Male breast reduction: the treatment
The aim of breast reduction surgery in men is to restore normal breast contours and correct any deformities of the breast, nipple or areola. If we treat you to reduce your male breasts, we will perform a surgical procedure. You will be completely anaesthetised, after which we will perform liposculpture and remove the excess fatty tissue. If necessary, we will then remove the solid mammary gland tissue through a small and discreet incision at the bottom of the areola. If you have lost a lot of weight, it is sometimes necessary to remove more skin. The exact technique used depends on several factors. We will first carefully assess your specific situation and tailor the treatment accordingly.
Aftercare and recovery from breast reduction surgery
Your plastic surgeon will discuss with you in advance how long it will take before you can resume your normal activities and when you can return to work. Immediately after the operation, you may feel some pain and your breast may be red and swollen. We recommend wearing compression garments for at least 6 weeks to achieve a beautiful shape, day and night for the first 4 weeks and only during the day for the last 2 weeks. The first three days after your operation are very important for your recovery. You should get plenty of rest at home, but it is not necessary to stay in bed. You are allowed to sit up and watch television or eat a meal at the table. You may move your waist and elbows, but try to avoid shoulder movements during the first few days. Lifting your arms vertically is also not recommended. If the operation and recovery go well, you can normally return to work after a week.
Result
After the procedure, the breast will have a flatter, firmer contour. Scars are usually discreetly placed around the areola and fade over time. The final result is usually visible after a few months.
